Matthew the tax collector

In March the Bible Study Class began its review and discussion of the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew's purpose was to prove to his Jewish audience, and to us today, that the son of a carpenter from Nazareth is the long-awaited Messiah., the King of the Jews.  An interest in the Old Testament kingdom runs throughout this gospel.  Matthew's signature phrase, "the kingdom of heaven" occurs 32 times in this book (and nowhere else in all of scripture).  The book opens with a genealogy designed to document Christ's credentials as Israel's king, and the rest of the book amplifies on this theme.  Matthew shows that Christ is the heir of the line of King David and demonstrates that He is the fulfillment of dozens of Old Testament prophecies regarding the king who would come.
